about us
Indelibly woven into the fabric of our community
With its debut issue in April 1992 (then called Stonewall News Spokane) by Publisher Lawrence B. Stone, Stonewall News Northwest became the Inland Northwest’s flagship Gay & Lesbian newspaper, chronicling not only the news & events – but also the courage, pain, pride and perseverance of the GLBTQA community of the Inland Northwest.
In 1995, the Publishing reigns transferred to John M. Deen. For a decade, Deen’s diligence and dedication continued to indelibly weave Stonewall into fabric of the community.
In 2005, Mike Schultz took control of Stonewall News Northwest, transforming the publication to further
reach and engage the visible, and not so visible, GLBTQA community and organizations throughout the region. While remaining true to its mission, publication content also shifted to appeal to a wider GLBTQA mainstream audience.
The creation of Stonewall’s Web site in May 2005 served to quickly expand its readership with an online
interactive Regional Calendar, Resource Listing, Distribution information, and convenient downloadable current and back-issues.
By January 2006, Stonewall’s Web site doubled the existing print
circulation with its growing online issue downloads and continues to enjoy substantial growth in internet
visitors and exposure for advertisers.
Stonewall expanded its regional print distribution 6-fold by July 2006, strengthening the Inland Northwest presence and opening up Western Washington markets from Bellingham through Seattle down to Vancouver.
Immediately following, in August 2006, Stonewall moved from a monthly to a semi-monthly publication schedule and increased the height of its pages 26%. The publishing cycle increased again in October 2006 to bi-weekly.
In June of 2007 the paper was purchased by Kniws Media Group, LLC., and is currently being published by Fred Swink. To reflect the new direction of the paper, it was renamed, or more precisely dropped part of its name, to become “Stonewall News”.
In January 2008 Stonewall News began weekly publication, and distributes throughout the Pacific Northwest. A sister publication is also being published, which focuses on the young adults in the LGBT community, named the merQ news.
