---

A blue wave? Forget about it. Last night, Democrats had such a lopsided victory with wins in Republican strongholds that months ago were thought to have been untouchable.

The results have been described as a [blue tsunami](https://deadline.com/2026/11/midterms-hollywood-celebrities-react-celebrate-1237212866/?ref=stonewallnews.net), an “[earthquake](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/11/04/us/texas-talarico-hinojosa-abbott-paxton.html?ref=stonewallnews.net)” and a [seismic triumph](https://www.nytimes.com/live/2026/11/04/us/midterm-election-results-democrats?ref=stonewallnews.net). In doing so, they flipped seven Senate seats and the House in an election that is already being touted as [a rebuke](https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/midterm-election-results-2026-latest-updates?mod=hp%5Ftwovizpluslive%5Fpos%5F1&ref=stonewallnews.net) of President Donald Trump.

The results will have major implications for LGBTQ progress. So far, [at least 20](https://www.advocate.com/politics/election/lgbtq-midterm-election-winners-2026?ref=stonewallnews.net) openly LGBTQ candidates have won their races. Vermont and Virginia passed ballot measures safeguarding LGBTQ rights. The most transphobic and bigoted candidates overwhelmingly lost their races. And the balance of power in key state legislatures has shifted towards candidates who have pledged support for queer issues, meaning many of the [hundreds of anti-LGBTQ bills](https://www.aclu.org/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights-2026?ref=stonewallnews.net) proposed annually will have a more difficult time being passed into law.

Here’s an in-depth round-up of everything you need to know about last night’s results and the implications they have for LGBTQ Americans.

### History-Making LGBTQ Representation

This year's election included several historic firsts for LGBTQ representation in American politics.

### *Democrat Chris Pappas becomes the first openly gay man elected as a U.S. Senator.*

In an acceptance speech in Manchester, Pappas [said](https://www.nbcnews.com/video/shorts/rep-pappas-thanks-husband-during-acceptance-speech-272818245639?ref=stonewallnews.net), “I want to thank the guy next to me, my amazing husband Vann. … He’s always been by my side. Tonight, win, lose or draw, I’m the luckiest guy because I’m married to a man that I love.”

### [Democrat Bentley Hudgins](https://www.unclosetedmedia.com/p/in-georgia-2-trans-candidates-believe?utm%5Fsource=publication-search) becomes Georgia’s first openly transgender and nonbinary legislator.

### Pro-LGBTQ Campaign Promises

In addition to greater representation, the election results may change policies that affect LGBTQ Americans. Candidates in tight races made campaign promises about issues including gender-affirming healthcare, transgender students and protections against discrimination. Now that the votes are in, here’s what the winners have promised to do and what the losers won’t be able to execute.

### James Talarico defeats Ken Paxton in Texas

James Talarico defeated MAGA Republican Ken Paxton, making him the first Democratic senator to win in the state since 1988\. Talarico said he will [defend LGBTQ Texans](https://jamestalarico.com/issue/freedom-family-faith?ref=stonewallnews.net) from government overreach and protect the legality of same-sex marriage.

His rhetoric on transgender rights [shifted](https://www.texastribune.org/2026/09/09/james-talarico-trans-sports-reversal-lgbtq-rights-texas-us-senate-race?ref=stonewallnews.net) [throughout](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/10/09/talarico-vowed-back-an-lgbtq-rights-bill-now-his-stance-isnt-so-clear/?ref=stonewallnews.net) the campaign, leaving his exact position unclear.

Talarico’s [win](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhUVkUz6U98&ref=stonewallnews.net) blocked Ken Paxton, who [said he would](https://www.kenpaxton.com/issues?ref=stonewallnews.net) “defeat the radical transgender movement.” In addition, Paxton has opposed LGBTQ-focused content in schools. He and his supporters also released several [anti-trans attack ads](https://www.unclosetedmedia.com/p/how-republicans-manufactured-anti?ref=stonewallnews.net) against Talarico, including one [depicting](https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2026/06/pac-drops-millions-on-anti-trans-ai-ad-showing-james-talarico-in-a-dress/?ref=stonewallnews.net) the Senator-elect in a dress singing a musical parody about youth gender transition.

### Abdul El-Sayed defeats Mike Rogers in Michigan

Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim senator and one of the most progressive Democrats in the Senate. El-Sayed [has championed](https://www.unclosetedmedia.com/p/lgbtq-michiganders-feel-betrayed?ref=stonewallnews.net) LGBTQ rights: His campaign said he [opposes](https://abdulforsenate.com/priority/medicare-for-all-the-path-to-a-healthier-america/?ref=stonewallnews.net)[ ](https://abdulforsenate.com/priority/money-out-of-politics/?ref=stonewallnews.net#h-civil-rights-amp-liberties)efforts to criminalize gender-affirming care and the use of lawsuits and funding cuts to stop providers from offering it. He also pledged to fight discrimination against LGBTQ people and [restore](https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/human-rights-campaign-pac-endorses-pro-equality-champion-abdul-el-sayed-for-u-s-senate?ref=stonewallnews.net) federal HIV and PrEP funding.

The now-defeated Rogers, by contrast, said he would prioritize “[education not indoctrination](https://rogersforsenate.com/?ref=stonewallnews.net),” by opposing LGBTQ inclusion in education. His [record in Congress](https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/human-rights-campaign-pac-endorses-pro-equality-champion-abdul-el-sayed-for-u-s-senate?ref=stonewallnews.net) includes voting against marriage-equality measures, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” According to the Human Rights Campaign, he has also called being gay a “lifestyle choice.”

### Gina Hinojosa defeats Greg Abbott in Texas

Hinojosa gives her acceptance speech. [CBS Texas](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O76XnolvbAM&ref=stonewallnews.net).

In a major upset, Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott to become the first Democratic governor elected in Texas [since](https://ballotpedia.org/Party%5Fcontrol%5Fof%5FTexas%5Fstate%5Fgovernment?ref=stonewallnews.net) 1990\. While Hinojosa didn’t lay out a specific LGBTQ track record on the campaign trail, in 2023 [she opposed](https://www.houstonchronicle.com/projects/2026/flip-flop-tracker-paxton-talarico/?ref=stonewallnews.net) Texas’ ban on gender-affirming care for minors and proposed an amendment to make the ban expire.

She is unseating Abbott’s administration, which has said that Texas agencies should reject policies it describes as “gender ideology.” As governor, he directed agencies to recognize only male and female sexes, opposed federal Title IX rules that protect LGBTQ students from discrimination and signed Texas’ ban on most gender-affirming medical care for minors.

### Keisha Lance Bottoms defeats Rick Jackson in Georgia

![](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!gc5S!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7acf57a6-c8eb-44a6-b476-9e9105c2fa0f_1316x671.png)

Bottoms celebrates her victory. [USA TODAY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V93JXhcniIA&ref=stonewallnews.net).

Bottoms won her election to become the nation’s first Black woman governor. Bottoms has an excellent track record on queer issues: She [has said](https://roughdraftatlanta.com/2026/05/06/georgia-lgbtq-rights-governor/?ref=stonewallnews.net) she would support efforts to strengthen statewide LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections covering employment, housing and public accommodations. Her plans also include a statewide LGBTQ advisory council, an administration official focused on LGBTQ issues, anti-bullying policies for schools, hate-crime tracking and a ban on conversion therapy for minors. During her tenure as Atlanta’s mayor, she expanded all-gender restrooms, funded trans-led organizations and helped residents access legal support for name changes and other identity documents.

Jackson, meanwhile, [promised to](https://rickjackson.com/action-plan/?ref=stonewallnews.net) ban what his campaign calls “ideological indoctrination” in schools and has made statements opposing gender-affirming care for minors, including a [campaign ad](https://www.facebook.com/reel/3359210174257750) threatening jail for providers.

### Annie Andrews defeats Darline Graham in South Carolina

![](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ag3v!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F1ea46713-462b-4b98-873e-66ff1c81f41e_1304x671.png)

Andrews celebrates her victory with a speech. [PBS NewsHour](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVzSkj62cXM&ref=stonewallnews.net).

Andrews, whom Trump repeatedly referred to as “Tranny Annie,” defeated Trump-backed Republican Graham, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in South Carolina since 1998\. Graham, the sister of the recently deceased Lindsey Graham, has followed in his footsteps by vocally opposing LGBTQ rights—her campaign ran [several anti-trans ads](https://abcnews4.com/news/lowcountry-and-state-politics/fact-checking-south-carolina-senate-race-ads-as-graham-andrews-trade-attacks-transgender-biological-men-womens-sports-pac-youth-gender-surgeries-california-china-washington-swamp-dc-darline-campaign-sex-hormones-lowcountry-10262026?ref=stonewallnews.net). Andrews has also attracted criticism on the campaign trail from LGBTQ people and advocates for [releasing](https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/sc-dem-senate-candidate-annie-andrews?ref=stonewallnews.net) her own ads calling trans women “biological men” and [supporting](https://www.unclosetedmedia.com/p/trans-voters-are-disappointed-in?ref=stonewallnews.net) South Carolina’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, which marked a reversal from previous statements where she decried anti-trans attacks by Republicans.

### In addition to the major races outlined above, there were many other upsets:

- Seven [Senate](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-elections/senate-results?ref=stonewallnews.net) Seats flipped for Democrats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio and Maine.
- [Governorships](https://abcnews.com/Elections/2026-us-governor-election-results-live-map/?ref=stonewallnews.net) flipped in Ohio, Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Nevada.
- The [House](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-elections/house-results?ref=stonewallnews.net) saw 29 seats flip for Democrats, including stunners in Texas, with more seats expected in the coming days.

### Mixed Results for LGBTQ Ballot Measures

In addition to electing the next slate of political leaders, Americans also voted on a variety of LGBTQ ballot measures that addressed gender-affirming healthcare, transgender students in sports and marriage rights. Some anti-LGBTQ measures have already passed, while the results for others are still pending. Here are the results:

1. [Arizona Proposition 318](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-arizona-proposition-318-restrictions-on-trans-athletes-and-bathroom-access.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → Arizona expanded its existing ban on trans athletes to apply to essentially all sporting events, including private schools, club sports and Little League. It also banned trans people from using their gender-aligned bathrooms and locker rooms at sporting events.
2. [Colorado Proposition 134](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-colorado-proposition-134-trans-athletes-participation-in-school-sports.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → As of 11:00 a.m. ET, the results for a Colorado measure banning trans girls from girls’ sports in the state were too close to call.
3. [Colorado Proposition 135](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-colorado-proposition-135-prohibit-gender-confirmation-surgery-for-minors.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → As of 11:00 a.m. ET, the results for a Colorado measure banning gender-affirming surgeries for people under 18 and prohibiting the use of any state or federal funds, including Medicaid, for said surgeries were too close to call.
4. [Nebraska Initiative Measure 442](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-nebraska-initiative-442-trans-athletes-participation-in-school-sports.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → Nebraska enshrined its existing ban on trans athletes into the state constitution.
5. [Vermont Proposal 4](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-vermont-proposal-4-equal-protection.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → Vermont passed an Equal Rights Amendment to its state constitution, enshrining equal treatment under the law on account of race, ethnicity, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and national origin as a constitutional right.
6. [Virginia Question 2](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-virginia-question-2-same-sex-marriage.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → Virginia passed a constitutional amendment removing the state’s ban on gay marriage and replacing it with new provisions enshrining marriage equality as a right and requiring all marriages to be treated equally under the law. While gay marriage was already legal in Virginia due to the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, this amendment future-proofs marriage equality in the state in the event of that decision being overturned.
7. [Washington Initiative 001](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-washington-measure-1-parental-rights.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → As of 11:00 a.m. ET, the results for a Washington measure requiring schools to allow parents to access their children’s “[medical or health records](https://washingtonstatestandard.com/voter-guides/ballot-measures/to-restore-the-2024-parents-bill-of-rights-initiative-001/?ref=stonewallnews.net)” and “records of any mental health counseling” were too close to call. Advocates have argued that the law could force schools to out LGBTQ students to their parents.
8. [Washington Initiative 638](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/11/03/us/elections/results-washington-measure-638-trans-athletes-participation-in-school-sports.html?ref=stonewallnews.net) → As of 11:00 a.m. ET, the results for a Washington measure which would pass one of the most extreme trans athlete bans in the country, requiring all students looking to compete in girls’ sports to submit evidence to verify their sex, were too close to call.

### The Results Will Affect State Legislatures and Anti-LGBTQ Bills

State legislatures have been some of the most crucial battlegrounds for LGBTQ rights—the ACLU has [tracked](https://www.aclu.org/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights-2026?impact=&ref=stonewallnews.net) 531 anti-LGBTQ bills in state legislatures in 2026\. Several states saw swings in the balance of legislative power, which could have major implications for future lawmaking around LGBTQ issues.

### Michigan

Democrats took control of Michigan’s House of Representatives, gaining a trifecta in the state government and possibly paving the way for pro-LGBTQ legislation to gain traction.

### **Minnesota**

Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party also gained a trifecta in the state government. Minnesota Democrats have been some of the most proactively pro-LGBTQ in the country, passing laws to make the state a “[trans refuge](https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2024/10/01/nx-s1-5103113/minnesota-trans-refuge-walz-vance-transgender-rights?ref=stonewallnews.net)” and [ban conversion therapy](https://www.nclrights.org/about-us/press-release/minnesota-becomes-21st-state-to-protect-youth-from-conversion-therapy/?ref=stonewallnews.net). This shift in power allows that work to continue without interference from Republicans.

### **Pennsylvania**

Democrats gained a trifecta in Pennsylvania’s state government, ending decades of Republican control in the Senate. This could pave the way for pro-LGBTQ legislation in the state, such as a [bill](https://www.cityandstatepa.com/policy/2026/04/house-passes-bill-would-enshrine-lgbtq-nondiscrimination-protections-state-law/413184/?ref=stonewallnews.net) introducing nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people that passed the House earlier this year but has been stalled in the Senate.

### **Arizona**

In a major shakeup, Democrats took both chambers of the Arizona legislature for the first time in 60 years, winning a trifecta in the state government. Republicans in the state have used their legislative control to pass anti-LGBTQ legislation, including bans on [trans athletes](https://abcnews.com/US/oklahoma-arizona-sign-transgender-sports-bans-law/story?id=83767504&ref=stonewallnews.net) and [gender-affirming surgeries](https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/30/politics/arizona-transgender-health-care-ban-sports-ban?ref=stonewallnews.net) for minors, so this shift in power could be consequential for LGBTQ Arizonans.

### **Wisconsin**

Democrats also took both chambers of the Wisconsin legislature, winning a trifecta. This could pave the way for pro-LGBTQ legislation in a state that has seen relatively little activity on LGBTQ issues in recent years.

### **New Hampshire**

Preliminary results suggest that Democrats now control both of New Hampshire’s legislative Houses. Republicans have passed multiple anti-LGBTQ bills, including bans on trans athletes and gender-affirming care for minors, so this shift could protect LGBTQ rights in the state. The state’s Republican governor, Kelly Ayotte, has a mixed track record on LGBTQ issues, having [vetoed](https://newhampshirebulletin.com/2026/06/22/trying-the-same-thing-again-isnt-going-to-get-a-different-result-ayotte-vetoes-anti-trans-bill/?ref=stonewallnews.net)some [anti-trans bills](https://bostonspiritmagazine.com/2025/07/new-hampshire-governor-kelly-ayotte-vetoes-two-anti-lgbtq-bills/?ref=stonewallnews.net) in the past despite [signing](https://www.nhpr.org/politics/2026-07-07/ayotte-law-teachers-parental-rights-gender-identity?ref=stonewallnews.net) others.
